Things That Make You Go "Hmmm..."

Apparently the Chilean earthquake literally knocked the earth off of it's axis. I am not a geologist/scientist/anythingist so I thought I would ask all you smarties out there: should we be worried? That seems like it's not a good thing. Any thoughts?
In other earth shattering news: Today Claire ate yams! YIPEE!!!! So far she has only willingly eaten mangoes and bananas, and rice cereal and oatmeal mixed with mangoes. I am glad we are expanding her food choices!

  1. I saw that on slate this morning and was like woah! I'm guessing this sort of thing happens from time to time and it's just life. Chile had a 9.5 earthquake like 60 years ago and the earth is still spinning. That must have had some effect on the earth's axis as well.

  2. It also made the days shorter. Just thought you'd like to know that too. I'm not sure how much shorter, but shorter none-the-less.

  3. Brian Williams reported on this last night on the evening news. He said the earth was moved 3 INCHES from it's axis and made the day shorter but said it was like a few millioneths of a second or something & raised the ground level of one island in chile by 6 feet!

so I don't know if you consider me one of the "smarties", so my opinion is we don't need to worry about it. Elder Bednar's counsel when he visited at our stake conference was, "Be a good boy, Be a good girl and quit worrying about it!" No need to fear my friend, we have the good news of the gospel! It does not always make anything better or take away our burdens, or for that matter the Chileans, but the Lord strengthens us so we can carry our burdens. Out of anyone I know here, you are the most prepared!!

  4. We don't need to be worried. Every earthquake has a similar effect on the Earth's axis. And they are all tiny. Taking a couple of microseconds off the length of the day is nothing.

Above all else, what would worrying about it do? We can't change the axis back by worrying.

  5. I am not really worried- but really, it's like "holy cow! That was some earthquake!" Definitely a sign of the times, huh?

I like that Bednar quote- I will have to keep that one. I am not nearly as prepared as I would like to be, however- but I am getting closer. Hopefully by June or July I will have the year's supply and then go from there. Then maybe I will have peace of mind!

  6. Not really even a sign of the times actually. I was reading an article that said that the frequency of earthquakes has not increased in the last 100 years since they started tracking them, nor has the magnitude. It just feels like it because of all the modern news reporting.

  7. Sounds like Claire has a sweet tooth!

  8. Dani- I suppose that's true- technology makes it easier to know what is going on. But I do think it is painfully obvious that we are in the last days by all that we are witnessing.

Shells-I am worried you are right and it was her sweet teeth that came in! It will be interesting to see if that trend continues- Audra is such a fantastic eater, I don't know if we can hope for that with Claire, but we will try.
