I Give Up!

Though some of you (mom) disagree, I have given up on potty training (see post below). A friend of mine reminded me that I needed to trust my instincts, and my instincts are telling me to wait a little while longer. This was brought about after I had her sit on the potty for over a half hour while watching video of herself and NOT going potty, then as soon as I bring her over to the table for a snack going potty in her pants. Plus, she didn't mind having wet pants- so that didn't help. We will try again in a month or two- but for now, back to diapers!

  1. I personally think you made the right choice. :) Don't force it or it will be awful. Of course, what do I know - I am terrified of potty training.

  2. You're a smart woman. Claire's still pretty little, and it's ok to have two in diapers! Heck, I had THREE in diapers for over a year! I survived, truly! Anyway, I eventually had to go the "more aggressive" route with Max (I can tell you about that later, if you like), but he was over 3 years old, and I think he was perfectly capable. Still 6 months after official "pee" training we are STILL working on poop training. And he STILL doesn't care too much if his pants are wet or poopy. *sigh* I take comfort in the fact that he probably won't go to kinder without being potty trained, so whatever. Penny, however, will be easier, I think! Seriously, diapers are so much easier.

  3. I think you are making the right choice; you know your child! I let guilt and pressure make me start training Braden waaaaay too early, and as a result he was four before he was really trained. It became a battle of the wills, and I lost the battle! I was trying to force Braden to do something he wasn't ready for yet. Brooke trained at a little over 2 1/2, and I haven't really started with Emma. The potty is in the bathroom, and we talk about it; that is the extent of any training right now, because she is not quite ready, maybe by the time she is 3 (I hope). I learned it is definitely more important to wait until they are really ready; I think you are doing what is right for both of you! :)

  4. Ou did the right thing! I started Dallin shortly after he turned 2 and got really aggressive with it around 2 1/2. I felt a lot of pressure and so did he and it all resulted in some problems with bowel movements that we occasionally have to battle even now.

Anneliese shows all the signs of readiness now at 2 1/2 and even usese the potty pretty frequently, but I have no desire to potty train and I am honestly waiting until she WANTS to be potty trained. After asking some experienced moms, they all seem to take this route eventually and their kids train faster, easier, with fewer accidents and less trauma. Yes, it may cost me more in diapers, but saves me in endless laundry, carpet stains, and battles.

My 2 cents would be to wait until you both are really ready! Good Luck.
