Daddy's Note

Today I had Audra send Daddy an e-mail at work. Here is what she wrote:

hhfjhgjhjkjhjkljkhkjhljhkjkhjjkjhljnjnlykljy.lkh

I asked her what it said, and this is what she said it said (in her exact words): "I got a new toy and I'm doing well. Don't you miss me, daddy? I love you very much. I hope you will be a great time seeing me tomorrow. I know that you love me so much. I know that I wish I could play your game and I love you and I hope that you have a great time. OK? I love to see you Sunday and I'm not going to miss you more. I wish I can be a girl again at your game."

She actually went on and on for about another 10 minutes, but I stopped typing.

(The game she is talking about is Lego Star Wars- she and Daddy play that game and Audra LOVES it and asks to play it with him constantly. She always likes to be the girl)

Dance Recital

I feel like I have been a blogging machine the last couple of weeks, but Audra has had some pretty big milestones (I have been neglecting Claire on this blog, I will honor her in a little bit) lately. Her latest one: Her dance recital.

On Saturday she performed on stage for the first time- and she did fantastic! She said is was a lot of fun, and she really liked that we took her to DQ to get ice-cream afterwards. We got a sitter for Claire (woo-hoo!) and everything went wonderfully well, and here are the pictures to prove it:

Instead of being in the audience, I was in the back helping with the wardrobe changes and making sure the girls got on stage OK. I told the girls silly stories so they would sit nice, and I ended up with a pretty good view since all the girls were looking in my direction to watch their teacher instead of at the audience.

When they put these costumes on, I told the story of "Princess Bathtub." It was as lame as the title, but the girls were sad I didn't have time to finish the story before it was showtime once again. By this time, Audra was tired of me taking pictures.
Audra took the lead in trying to get the girls organized on this very difficult dance move- forming a circle and walking around:

Happy Birthday!!!

Today was Audra's Birthday, and even though we already had her party, we wanted to make today a special day. So, we let her decide what restaurant she wanted to go to. Thinking she would choose Chick-fil-A or The Corner Bakery, we thought it would be a fun tradition to start. We might rethink this, because instead she chose The Elephant Bar- a very nice sit-down restaurant. To quote Audra:

"I want to go where we went with Aunt Michelle and I got ice-cream."

I was able to deduce that she really just wanted the ice-cream and was able to convince her to go to Red Robin instead. Which was nice, because The Elephant Bar is a 30 minute drive away, whereas Red Robin is only about 3.

Audra was very excited that she got to choose her restaurant. She told me that was "really fun" and that she was turning 5 tomorrow so she could go to a restaurant again.

During dinner I asked her some questions. Her favorite place: This place. Her favorite animal: A polar bear. Her favorite food: I don't want to answer. Her favorite activity: The restaurant is too loud.

It's strange to think that four years ago today she entered this world, but it is even weirder to think there was ever a time when she wasn't in our lives.

She is such a fun girl. The other day this was our conversation:

Me: Audra, do you want to go to Grandma and Grandpa's house?
A: No, I want to go to Ben's mother's house.

She is fascinated that grandma is Ben's mom and such. It's so cute!!

Audra loves scissors and cutting up the Sunday ads- which is what I let her cut. She obviously LOVES clothes. She doesn't like having her hair brushed- but who does at this age? She loves her baby sister more than anything else. Every morning the second Claire wakes up Audra goes in and keeps her entertained. She loves wrestling with Claire.

Her motivation is privileges. If she isn't eating her dinner, I'll say "That's fine- you don't have to eat your dinner. But if you don't eat your dinner you don't get dessert." She has never gone without dessert.

What else can I say? She's great.

Two of Three- and Other Things

Well, this week hasn't been the best- but it could be infinitely worse, so we are counting our blessings!!!

On Monday Ben hit a biker on the way home from work. Oops!!! Thankfully, the guy was perfectly fine, but his back tired was ruined so we need to replace his back tire. That could have been a lot worse, though, so we are grateful it will only be a couple hundred bucks and VERY VERY grateful that nobody was hurt!!! But, when Ben came home I said, "Well, bad things come in three's, so we have two more to go!"

Last night when Ben came home we heard this loud "CRACK!" We didn't know what it was, but thought it was something from outside and didn't worry about it too much.

But then this morning I hear, "Crap! Our garage door is broken!" The spring actually snapped, and we really can't open it. The lady on the phone said when the spring snaps, you can't open it because all of the pressure of the door goes onto that snapped spring and makes it virtually impossible to open. So, now we are hanging out at home waiting for the garage door fixer to come.

Now we're at 2 for 3! I wonder what the last thing will be...(it's a little ironic because just the other day I was thinking, "oh, how nice- it's been a few months since something on the house broke or we've had some unexpected expense. That feels good." Now I know- never think those thoughts or you are asking for trouble!!!)

But, in a way it is rather humorous and I am trying to think of it that way. It kind of stinks that Ben has to take a vacation day because our cars are held hostage in the garage, but that's not the worst thing in the world!

Today also happens to be Audra's Birthday. In honor of that, I will leave you with this gem:
We were going to a restaurant, so we asked Audra to go get changed out of her Minnie Mouse Dress so we could go. She came down dressed like this and exclaimed, "I'm ready!" Now, tell me, how can you not be happy with life- even when things don't go well- when you've got a character like this living in your house? We are truly blessed- and I am grateful every day for that!!! (and yes, we let her wear that to the restaurant)

We Survived!

Today I heard the phrase, "when is my Birthday party?" a few too many times.

Because I survived the Easter Party so well, I decided to have Audra's party at our house this year. I had some fun planning it, and I think it turned out great.

The theme was (surprise, surprise) Princesses. Specifically, Princess School.

The guests arrived and were given a checklist of things they needed to learn in order to be a Princess. The list included:
1. Dress like a princess
2. Wear a tiara
3. Walk/wave like a princess
4. Dance like a princess
5. Learn good from evil

For each item on the list, they had to complete a task. They had to  put on a princess dress, then they made tiaras (note: craft stores sale foam crowns kids can decorate for $2.99 each. I cut out crowns out of poster board and I got 12 crowns for $1.79. The kids were just as happy with paper crowns as they would have been with foam crowns, and my pocketbook was much happier as well). Then I took them on a "Princess Parade" where they had to wave and have their hand on their hip. I took them outside where Princess Violet was waiting for them- yes, I hired a Princess (one of the teenage girls from church) to be at the party. The girls LOVED it- even though they were shy! Princess Violet had a wand and one of the little girls said, "I know the princess is real, but not the wand." So cute!!!!

Then we did a little Princess dance with the girls.

Learning good from evil was a little more difficult. I decided to put pictures of either a mean witch or a good princess inside balloons. The girls then popped the balloons and had to find a picture of the good princess to present to Princess Violet. Of course, the girls LOVED this task, but: putting the pictures inside the balloons was incredibly difficult! Unfortunately, I had the really small balloons (I didn't realize this at the time), and my cheeks hurt really bad blowing up those stupid balloons.

From there we had dinner. I made the mistake of visiting a website about how to throw a princess party that said, "Princesses don't eat pizza." That was a bummer, because my original plan was to send Prince Ben to Little Caesar's. Instead of pizza, I made heart shaped jell-o jigglers, fruit kabobs, and PBJ's and cheese sandwiches cut into fun shapes, and kool-aid with strawberry slices in them. Note: 4-year-old princesses would have been just as happy with pizza.

Then we decorated cupcakes (some of you like to spend hours making incredibly beautiful and magnificant cakes. While impressed, I am not like that. Having them decorate their own cupcakes took time during the party- thus reducing the amount of activities I needed to plan- and was a lot easier for me- well, except the clean-up) and opened presents.

Prince Ben and I then spent the next hour cleaning up after the party and wondering if it was worth the money we saved doing the party at home, or if next time we will go somewhere instead. The jury is still out.

I'll have to say a quick word about Claire. She was the biggest obstacle to getting things ready for the party- Prince Ben finally took the girls to the park until just before the party. During the party, she was kind-of trying to figure out how she fit in with all these girls who are just older than her. She truly wants to be a part of them, but doesn't quite fit in. This will be a problem for the next 16 years I think.

Without further ado, here are some pictures (Princess Violet's mom took more way awesome pictures, so I will post more later. Prince Ben was in charge of pictures, and he took a lot more video than still photos):

Here you can get a glimpse of Princess Violet:

Temple De-Struction

Today Audra and I were able to go to the temple and pull out flowers. Apparently, they have winter flowers and summer flowers. We got to take out the winter flowers to make way for the summer ones. It was technically a Relief Society activity, but kids were involved, and it was one of the best RS activities I have ever been to! I LOVED that Audra could come with me and that Audra is learning to love the temple as much as I do!!!

About to get her hands dirty

Sunbeam Teacher Jackpot And The Passion Behind It

Every week in primary (children's Sunday School), Audra's teacher does something amazing. They planted peas and got to take them home one week. One week they did finger painting and the teacher made them each their own aprons. Audra's favorite is a flashlight they got to take home- a reminder that God created night and day and we should be grateful. This week, however, she really outdid herself:

The lesson was on how God created animals, and for each of the 7 kids in her class she made finger puppets. The faces, stripes, and whiskers are all embroidered on. Then, she embroidered on Noah's Ark and their name. They have a carrying case where the animals go to sleep, as Audra says.

I am hoping you can see some of the detail on these zebras- everything is embroidered.
Seriously, has there ever in the history of the world been a Sunbeam teacher who did so much for their kids? I totally feel like we won the Primary Lottery to get her. This teacher is a dear friend of mine, and her daughter is one of Audra's best friends. It is such a blessing to have somebody who loves the kids so much working with Audra!!!

This project alone must have taken her weeks to make. I told her this was an heirloom and Audra's kids would someday play with them. She said if some of the animals get destroyed or lost she would make new ones for me so they can be an heirloom.

Kathy has a huge passion for the kids and for the opportunity to work with them. I have to admit I am a little envious of her passion. I suppose right now my passion is geneaolgy- from which I am getting carpul tunnel- but there's not really anything in my life that has me so excited that I stay up until 2 AM because I have to get it done.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE my life right now- seriously, I do. There is nothing I would rather be doing than staying home with the kiddos. I realize this sounds contrary, and I am not sure how to articulate this in a way that makes sense. It is not that I do not fill fulfilled, because I absolutely, 100% feel fulfilled. I do not miss work, I do not miss much of anything- I LOVE this phase of my life.

But, I do miss having that passion- that drive- to do something great. I am going to a volunteer fair tonight, and I am hoping to find a volunteer opportunity there that I can get passionate about. Preferably something where I am directly helping the poor, will only take a few hours a month, and will not take away from me being my kids' mom at all.

I guess there are some things I am passionate about:
-My kids
-Genealogy/temple work
-Couponing
-I'm getting more excited about organic foods and my own gardening- this summer will be a test
-Serving in my church calling (I hate to admit it, because I know someday this will happen but right now is not a good time because I have little kids, but I would really love to be a seminary teacher- that is something I would get very passionate about, and with my teaching background I am pretty sure I would be good- I know, I am cursing myself and asking to be humbled)

Ben wishes I would put "cleaning" on that list, but that will never happen!

Does this make any kind of sense? Now I am just rambling...any thoughts out there on what drives you (in a good way)?

What To Do When Claire Gets Sick

I can't complain, we have had a very healthy winter. But, Claire has come down with a head cold and so we are currently under house arrest. This wouldn't be bad if both the kiddos were lethargic and merely wanted to lie around watching TV. But, no. Both are as wild and crazy as ever, which is difficult when cooped up- as I know many of you have also discovered! So while Claire was taking nap #1 today, Audra and I baked some cupcakes and then after Claire woke up we delivered them to some of Audra's friends. It ended up being a great way to kill some time! And who wouldn't love to answer the door to this sweet face?

Audra made some cards for each of her friends. I thought we would just go to one or two houses, but then Audra started listing off the names of all her friends, and I realized we didn't make enough cupcakes. Sorry if you didn't get any....

Then, after Ben came home, I was able to go BY MYSELF and score some pretty sweet deals. I knew there was a consignment sale coming up, so I called a friend who is always super involved with it to see if she was going to the pre-sale, when all the volunteers can go in advance of the general public. I was hoping she might be willing to try and find something for me.  She offered to give me a pre-sale pass to go myself! SCORE! I went and got all the shoes for $18.50!!!  Normally, one pair of shoes costs about $15, so I would say I did pretty dang well! Girls need so many pairs of shoes, it starts early!
Some of you might think buying used shoes is oh so disgusting. Well, I don't- and shoes are incredibly expensive, especially when you need summer, winter, black, white, sandals, water shoes, etc. I'll take the cheap shoes whenever I can!

Not surprisingly, Audra was incredibly excited when I came home with the new shoes! Even though they were all too big for her, she insisted on trying on every pair and walking around the house. She would exclaim, "these aren't too big- they fit!" Even though they didn't. Here is our model with one of her new pairs:
Then, because this at least started out as a baking post, here is a cute little story:
Last week, King Soopers had their bakery cookies on sale, so I bought some because Ben loves them. Audra came home and saw them on the counter. She sighed a HUGE sigh, put her head in her hands, and exclaimed in complete exasperation:
"I cannot believe it! WHY did you buy CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES?"
I replied, "Because they were on sale and daddy loves them."
Again in complete disbelief, she  cried,

"OH MY GOODNESS!"
I guess according to her, CCC must always be made from scratch!

Have You Ever?

I beg you to tell me if you have ever seen a more stylish bike rider:

Please notice the shoes on the wrong feet and the pants that practically come to her knees. And yes, that's a leotard under her jeans.

This is our Audra- a little eccentric when it comes to clothes, but oh so cute!

Here is a little update on what she's up to:

The other day we sat at the dinner table and she said- in all seriousness- "So, Ben, how was work today?"
It was hard not to laugh at that one.

We have started using "priviledeges" with her to get her to listen better. Time-outs weren't working, and for awhile we were throwing away candy and it worked for a few weeks. But, when I say, "if you want to go the park tomorrow, you have to behave at the store today" it works pretty much 100% of the time and has made our lives a lot easier. She was having horrible tantrums with transitions- when we had to leave grandma and grandpas or a friends house, for example. Now, those tantrums have disappeared because she has to earn her priviledges by being good.

In reality, she is an angel child. Seriously. In primary, she loves to sing and she sits so nicely that the teacher puts the kids who are misbehaving next to Audra and she helps them to behave by her example.

She has no interest in her letters or numbers, but I don't care. She will sit and flip through a book for an hour, making up a story and using her creativity. She'll catch on to the rest when she's ready, but I'm not going to push her. I want her to love learning, and I think letting her just have fun with books right now does that.

She is really excited to have found out that grandma and grandpa are Ben's mom and dad. Now she'll say, "remember, daddy, that grandma is your mommy and grandpa is your daddy, but they're my grandma and my grandpa." Everytime she says it as if Ben had forgotten.

Speaking of Ben...she is figuring out how to manipulate Ben a little bit. While I go put Claire down for bedtime, Ben puts Audra in bed and gives her a kiss good-night. Now, Audra will ask for a cup of water, which Ben gets. Then, she all of a sudden gets the urge to tell Ben everything that happened during the day, everthing that will happen tomorrow, and everything else she can think up. She will rattle off information super fast for 5 minutes (delaying bedtime) while Ben listens. I tell him it is her stall tactic so she doesn't have to go to bed, but he doesn't care because he loves to hear her talk. I can't blame him- I love to listen to her talk as well.

Since the binkie fairy came, she does not take naps. That has been an adjustment for me. I am playing a lot more CandyLand. Thankfully, the weather has been nice and she'll go play in the backyard for quite a bit so I can attempt to get things done around the house.

Speaking of which, I need to get back to the laundry. Claire's mini-update will come later.

The Binkie Fairy

The Binkie Fairy finally came.

What is the Binkie Fairy you ask?

About two months ago I introduced the idea of a Binkie Fairy to Audra. I talked the Binkie Fairy up really well- that she would bring presents to Audra, and take her binkies because Audra was a big girl and doesn't need a binkie anymore.

For the past bit, Audra has said every night, "did the binkie fairy come? I don't think so. I don't see any presents." And then she will even say, "Why hasn't the binkie fairy come?" and such.

So, today I decided it was time. After bath time, Audra walked into this:

The Binkie Fairy wrote this letter:
Dear Audra,
Today is a special day. You are such a big girl now that you no longer need a binkie! I took it to give to a little baby named Makenna who needed a binkie, but I left you presents in return. You are such a BIG girl- even bigger than me!
Love,
The Binkie Fairy

It is fitting that the binkie went to Baby Makenna (who Audra was decided was a baby binkie fairy) because ALL of her dolls and bears are named Makenna, after her cousin. It's really funny.

She immediately put on the tutu she got:

She and Claire also enjoyed the headbands and socks she got. For some reason, a couple of weeks ago, Audra fixed on the notion that the BF had to bring her headbands. I am not sure where she got that, but she did.
For 15 minutes Audra ran around as excited as you have ever seen anybody- so excited that she got a tutu. She told us all sorts of things about the Binkie Fairy that we never knew, and she was incredibly excited that she is now a big girl and doesn't need a binkie. It was cute. Actually, it was one of the cutest things in the world- I wish I had a video camera. Have you guys noticed how much she likes to dress up?

And, she went to bed nice and easy- no tears at all. She did insist on wearing her tutu to bed, which was fine. I am hoping she'll sleep through the night without waking up. She has been known to wake up in the middle of the night, and unable to find her binkie, to cry and cry. So, we'll see how tonight goes.

But overall, I think it went really well.

This Is Awesome!!!

My dear friend took the picture of Audra in her "wedding" dress and did this with it:

Isn't that AWESOME!!!! She explains how she did it here:

Yes, I will definitely be crying about this someday!

Foreshadowing

I am pretty sure I will cry over these pictures someday...

Thanks for indulging me with these pictures! Audra got this dress as a hand me down, and even though it is too big she insists on wearing it. So I thought I would have some fun and have a little mini-shoot. Obviously, I am not a photographer, but I think they turned out really sweet. When it's time for her to wear a grown up white gown, I don't know what I'll do...
